REPORT ON NELSON MANDELA DAY.
The students of Grades IX to XII of K R Mangalam World School participated in Nelson Mandela Day Celebrations on the occasion of Birth Centenary held at India International Centre, New Delhi.
The celebrations began with inspirational songs by choir groups of schools. Distinguished guests on the occasion were Mr. S. Mukherjee, Indian ambassador at Cape Toen, South Africa, Mr. Dennis, UN representative at International Centre, High Commissioner of South African Embassy and other dignitaries from South Africa.
It was followed by a peace rally with each school holding coloured flags which represented India and South Africa. Photographs of Gandhiji, Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King were also carried and the rally ended at the auditorium.
In the auditorium the occasion was formally inaugurated by lighting candles by students representing 10 Schools from Delhi-NCR. The dignitaries were also given a formal welcome by the students. This was followed by a Community song lead by Mr. Shastri of Gandhi Saharid Association. Everyone present was asked to join ‘we shall overcome’ by holding each other’s hand.
This was followed by showcasing videos on the most important events in the life of Gandhiji, Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King, and their contribution to society and the world at large. The videos beautifully illustrated the lives, struggles and achievements of these great men which the students enjoyed watching. It was a wonderfully enriching experience for all present. It was indeed an enlightening experience for the students.
