KRMUN-2K19

The mega edition of K.R.Mangalam World Schools Model United Nations was held from 25 July 2019- 27 July 2019 at K.R.Mangalam University, Sohna Road. For the first time all the branches of  K.R.Mangalam World Schools came together to host this magnum opus event upholding  the KRM values themed as ‘Ideas Quo Loquimur’ meaning consideration of ideas of mind and  things which one necessarily distinguishes for the communication of thoughts and create a better world to live in peace and harmony.

It was indeed a successful confederation of togetherness. The conference was an interactive platform where delegates discussed social and international affairs. It gave participants an opportunity to engage in debates at a diplomatic level.

KRMUN-2019 consisted of eight Committees which included UNGA, UNHRC, UNSC, SVR, Hogwarts, Open Forum, WTO and IP. With an overwhelming response from schools from Delhi NCR, a total no of 13 schools participated with the delegate count going up to 500 in 8 committees of KRMUN 2019.Various issues were picked up in the different committees. Lot of brainstorming sessions were planned for all participants to gain an insight into the functioning of United Nations. All the eight committees were provided with simulated atmosphere where all delegates gained immense debating and negotiating experience, and in turn, made themselves aware of the daunting challenges faced universally.

UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY

One of the largest committee held at KRMUN 2019 UNGA discussed, debated and negotiated on ‘countering illicit trade of arms and weapons to non-state actors’. A committee of around 150 delegates discussed the varied aspects of the agenda. A large committee such as UNGA comprised mostly of first timers who were successful in portraying their diplomacy in the committee. They discussed the role of terrorists in hampering global peace and discussed the strategies to combat the global issues.

UNITED NATIONS HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL

The UNHRC debated and discussed the Human Rights violations in occupied territories with special emphasis on the Israel –Palestine issue. The delegates elaborated on the causes and implications of wars. Delegates emphasized the need for all states to come together in order to find new and innovative solutions to the problem.

UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL

At KRMUN 2019, one of the committees with the most heated debate was the UNSC. The committee discussed the agenda ‘reviewing the application of self-determination with special emphasis on the Principle of Territorial Integrity’. All member states of the Security Council discussed and deliberated over important case-studies like the situation in Palestine, and argued and introspected the validity of Israeli claims in occupied territories. Discussion over the situation in Syrian Arab Republic took place, alongside, giving a universal definition to ‘self-determination’.

SLUZBHA VNESHNEY RAZVEDKI

SVR was an intelligence committee at KRMUN 2019. SVR is the foreign intelligence agency of the Russian Federation. This committee excelled in terms of technical level of debate. The portfolios that were present in the committee were Director of Intelligence, Director of Latin-American operations, Director of Operations etc. Given the portfolios, each delegate had a specific control or mandate vis-à-vis the operations of SVR. The agenda for the committee was ‘Classified’. Since this committee was a continuous crisis simulation, updates or crisis were given to the delegates over which they gave their arguments and formulated a plan of action for the success of SVR.

EMERGENCY MEET OF THE HOGWARTS SCHOOL OF WITCHCRAFT & WIZARDRY

The committee was based on the Harry Potter books authored by J.K. Rowling. The emergency meet of the Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry was called after the first Wizarding war for the restructuring and rebuilding of the Wizarding world. The Board of Directors of Hogwarts along with the teachers attended the meeting where they tried to find out the mole who was passing the information to the Dark Lord from within Hogwarts. The committee was a continuous crisis committee and new crises were introduced throughout its duration.

OPEN FORUM

The committee Open Forum focused on the Agenda- Privatisation of essential public sector enterprises. The delegates taking their turns debated and gave credible solutions for the same. The committee revolved around the question of railways, electricity, sanitation, water facilities and other public sector enterprises of profit making private companies. The main concern to ponder over lies in the fact that when Government which works for the welfare of people has not been able to keep up with the aspirations of people, then how would private companies which work for profit maximization be able to achieve the same goal.

WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION

Being an economic committee, there was a fruitful discussion on the agenda relating to globalization and protectionism. There was a double delegation committee where two delegates represented on portfolio/ nation. There were approximately seventy-five members nations present in the council. All member nations discussed upon the impacts of globalization in different parts of the world, how international trade is beneficial and the different problems faced by the trade barriers which are a part of various countries ‘policies’. The committee debate focused on the economic aspect, wherein discussion relating to General Agreement on Trade & Tariffs [GATT] took place.
