    Project Paridhi- Winter Solstice 2017

Students of K.R. Mangalam participated in ‘ProjectParidhi’ a science experimentation project by SPACE to popularize hands on science. This project was initiated by SPACE on21st December 2017 in Jantar Mantar. yearsago, with the intention to increase awareness amongst Indians that science can be done without any complicated equipment. Under this project the studentstried to findout the circumference of the Earth by taking measurements of the shadows made by the sun in a day, as done 2300 years back by astronomer Eratosthenes, who was able to measure it within 2% of the present accepted value.

ProjectParidhi_1Three volunteers of K.R. Mangalam world school, Greater Noida, Apurv(Class VI), Tanishtha(Class VI) and Drishti(Class VIII), went to Jantar Mantar and helped in smooth conduction of the event. They helped the students of different schools to calculate circumference of the Earth. The students calculated the circumference of the Earth by using simple tools and mathematics. Students performed the shortest shadow experiment as done by the astronomer Eratosthenes 2300 years back.

ProjectParidhi_2Through this projectthey helped the participants understand seasons and motion of the Earth. Gnomons (a Greek word for an object whose shadow serves as an indicator of time, especially of the hour of the day) of all sizes and shapes have been used in the past – including soft drink bottles and cricket wickets to huge gnomons such as, QutubMinar, Samrat Yantra at Jantar Mantar and sundial at Barapullah, Delhi.

SPACE India- Universe in the School

The Universe in the School Programme(UITS) is a unique model that popularizes Astronomy and Space Sciences through a curriculum based academic educational program, accompanied by workshops, outreach events, competitions, trips and projects. It is organized throughout the academic year, and among all the classes (K-12) and all the students in the school. It aims to utilize the Universe available around us to make the students learn Astronomy, Natural Sciences and Life Skills.

After researching over 150 schools in India, SPACE derived the concept of establishing the “Centre for Student Excellence in Astronomy and Space Sciences” programme in a way which is fully customizable, dynamic, empowering, simple, effective and sustainable.

The Programme introduces students to an enthralling world of Astronomy and Space Sciences through activities, experiments, games and quizzes. Students are not browbeaten into cramming facts and figures to prove their academic acumen. Instead, they are encouraged to ask questions and apply their reasoning to de-mystify scientific phenomenon. This approach not only makes them more confident in handling science problems, but also in handling real life issues. It also makes science pure fun!

This Program bridges the gap between Innovation, Education and Evolution. Where the emphasis for the schools is on the concepts:

    I read = I learn, I Do = I Understand
Science is a subject, Science is a tool I have

CSE acts as a Resource and Guide Center based at the school, which implements various initiatives for the school. It allows schools to choose and customize all or what best suits it and offers its students the following:

    • Astronomy Club
    • Student Workshops
    • Outreach Projects and Events
    • Competitions
    • Projects
    • Integration with regular school subjects and curriculum
    • Tours and Excursions, Seminars and Talks
    • Community Development Programs and Student Exchange

  • Science Outdoor Activity

    Science Outdoor Activity

Play is a pivotal part of a child’s life. Outdoor play fosters opportunities for creativity, imagination, social connections, and learned behaviors. Play allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength. Play is important to healthy brain development. It is through play that children at a very early age engage and interact in the world around them. By keeping this importance of outdoor playful learning in our mind we planned an outdoor science activity for class III and IV.

  • Explore the Sounds

    Onomatopoeia Sound Recognition

    MATERIAL REQUIRED

    • Dried leaves
    • Twigs
    • Keys
    • Trumpet
    • Bangles
    • Table bell
    • Toy car
    • Pen
    • Metal chain
    • Door bell
    • Utensils
    • Basket ball

Communication and speech are very much related. The human ear and the  voice are also related when it comes to speech and communication. Throughout this outdoor activity , I will attempt to explain and successfully show how the use of “Onomatopoeia” and the combination of the voice, the ear, and speech can help children become great readers and writers.

The ultimate learning facility is the classroom. The entire school is a sound paradise. Within each room, there are sounds imaginable and unimaginable-children and adults are bombarded with constant sound.  When focusing on Onomatopoeia,  we must allow children to listen quietly and attentively. They will become experts to what makes what sound and they’ll be able to imitate it. They’ll be able to hear the sounds of the motor in a water fountain, the sounds of a fish tank, footsteps in the hallway, the click of pen and maybe outside sounds as well. There is really no limit to the way in which sound is perceived.

    Procedure

We tried  allow the children to explore the sounds outside. Discovering outside sound is great. Children can become more aware of outside sounds when their eyes are closed. The same was executed…..the children worked together in a group. Each child was blind folded and one of the groupmember took an object and made it sound. Eg….bells, coins, twigs, paper, keys, whip, leaves, trumpet, pen etc. These are the sounds they hear  everyday in the school.

Explore the Sounds (Rakhi)_1Being outside and exploring  sounds was overwhelming and quite tranquil. The sound of wind blowing through the leaves of a tree, insects, or the chirping of birds enthralled the young learners.

With the physical and not-so-physical environment, children can continue to become creative in their own unique way in learning to read and write “sound words”.

    Observation and Understanding-

Guidance through words, sounds, music, and prior knowledge of varied experiences can lead to dramatic academic gains for children. Sound is heard and created at all levels and volumes. The time has long since come when we as educators must relate the reality of our society in our educational institutions. Learning to read and write should be a pleasurable experience in our schools for all students.

The workshop started with a presentation on Sally Ride EarthKAM and how the program works with a brief demonstration showing the students how to request for the photographs keeping various aspects such as orbital path, weather, location, day/night preference in mind. After which the students had an hour of exciting time of locating regions of their interest and requesting for photographs after examining weather, orbits and other aspects. • Project Paridhi

    Project Paridhi By Space

‘Project Paridhi’  a flagship project of SPACE, to popularize hands on science,  was conducted in K.R Mangalam World School, Pocket 5, Greater Noida on 26th September, 2017. Students of classes VI-VIII participated in the Event and performed the experiment. They skillfully took the readings and recorded their observations. The workshop ended with the calculations done by the students.

The main agenda of this project was to  find out the circumference of the Earth by taking measurements of the shadows made by the sun in a day, as done 3000 years back by astronomer Eratosthenes, who was able to measure it within 2% of the present accepted value. This project was initiated  with the intention to increase awareness  that science can be done without any complicated equipment.

KRM believes  that science can be best learnt by doing. ‘Project Paridhi’ is a science experimentation project by SPACE to popularize hands on science. Participants learnt basic concepts of science in a fun way with hands on science and use geometry and trigonometry.

In this hands on science activity students got involved in measuring the length of shadows cast by a vertical object (gnomon) as cast by the sun, to determine the local noon. Simple trigonometry leads to the calculation of the circumference using the measured sun angle. The activity replicates that was done by Eratosthenes. It is typically conducted on days of Equinoxes and Solstices.
