“Breathe the air, drink the drink,
taste the fruit and resign yourself
to the influence of the earth.”
-by Henry David Thoreau
Every year, Earth Day is celebrated on 22nd April to remind everyone their duties towards ‘Mother Nature’ and to call attention to some of our most pressing environmental and social problems, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and dwindling natural resources. Children too can make a significant contribution in saving the environment. It is the right time for children to learn about the environment, how they can preserve it and why. Starting early can truly make a difference and inculcate habits they will carry on as they grow.
To make a difference and to be the change the children were told about the importance of a clean, green and a healthy planet. They were asked to practice those skills to learn and follow. Children were also told how important is their small effort in caring the environment.
To explain children the magnitude of the problem students of Pre Primary wing at K.R. Mangalam World School, Paschim Vihar celebrated Earth Day. Celebrating Earth Day serves as a conscious reminder of how fragile our planet is and how important it is to protect it. It was a means to sensitize students towards the need to preserve our environment and ecology.
As a part of environmental education, the children took a pledge to contribute towards a clean, healthy and plastic free India. “Go- Green” initiative was taken up by the students of Pre School. Students enthusiastically participated in ‘Let’s plant a sapling’ activity, where in they planted their own saplings with gram seeds / chana seeds, soil, bell peppers in a pot. Pre Primary students also made a poster and wrote ‘SAVE EARTH’.
Earth Day was celebrated through educational and action-oriented activities that were fun. The tiny tots took a pledge to keep their environment clean and help their parents in watering and nurturing the plants. There are innumerable ways in which a small child can make a difference. The purpose for the Earth Day celebration is to develop children’s, cognitive social and emotional skills.
“Live in each season as it passes.
Breathe the air, drink the drink,
taste the fruit and resign yourself
to the influence of the earth.”
