Staying healthy is hence a basic need, and particularly during exams, it is a must. Here are a few health tips that can help students maintain a healthy lifestyle during the exams, which also serve to raise their efficiency to manifold:

On their way to finish off with the early morning studying ahead of the examinations, most of the students tend to miss out their breakfast, and this is one of the unhealthiest things that they do. Morning breakfast is a must and should not be taken for granted. You need to start the day with the right food to keep yourself energized throughout the exam day. Never ever commit the mistake to skip your breakfast, particularly if it is your exam day. You may feel that by skipping the breakfast you’ll get a few more minutes to indulge in some last minute studies but mind it, missing the food will be of no good as you will eventually start to feel drowsy and exhausted.

Similarly, having a balanced meal throughout the day matters. Make sure to have a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, dairy, nuts, and protein-rich food items instead of chips and chocolates. Smart snacking is necessary to balance nutrient level in the body. Have smaller portions of meals filled with healthy fats, whole grains, and lean meat so that you feel fuller and have the energy to study. Adequate nourishment to the body fuels your brain activity and aids in memory retention. Moreover, eating healthy will prevent illnesses that can be detrimental to studies. This is why it is important that you keep an eye on what you eat and when you eat. With a balanced healthy diet, you will get all your nutritional needs and your body will be in a better position to function at an optimum level during the exams.

Prevent Dehydration:

The final exams, unfortunately, always fall during the summers. It is the hottest time of the year and you might easily get dehydrated. It is important to keep your body well hydrated by increasing your intake of fluids. However, choose to take the right beverages, though. Caffeine and sugary drinks should be limited and kept to a minimum. Include lots of water, fresh fruit juices, milk and green teas. Also, coconut water, lassi, and buttermilk are good to be incorporated into your diet. Keeping yourself hydrated will keep your energy level in check while you study and will avoid dipping. It also increases concentration, aids in mental alertness, and prevents headaches. Hence, during exams times, make sure to maintain the hydration level of your body by raising the intake of foods and beverages high in water content.

Have Regular Physical Activity:

Physical activity is important to improve academic performance. Amidst all the stress and mental exertion of the exams, it is easy to forget giving adequate physical exercise to your body. Regular exercises like aerobics and walking can boost brain activity and increase verbal memory and learning. Since exercise increases the oxygen flow to the brain, it also improves the ability of the students to think and memorize. You can also go for meditation accompanied by yoga to reduce exam stress. Yoga is indeed a great stress buster and a way to give some good rest to your brain from all the clutters of the day. You can also take a short 20-minute walk putting on your favorite light music to refresh yourself and upbeat your mood.  Remember, taking short breaks after long hours of studying is crucial to revamp your brain and to refrain yourself from getting mentally exhausted.

Sacrificing sleep for late-night cramming is never a good idea. Your brain is not a machine. It needs ample time to rewind and refuel itself for better functioning. Sleep is the natural mechanism that does the process of regulating brain activity. While preparing for exams, students often compromise the body’s most important need i.e. sleep. Sleep deprivation can result in several health repercussions, which are particularly more when you are stressed. For the brain to assimilate the information, it is very important to get adequate sleep. That too, during exam times, sleep is crucial to maintaining proper physical and mental health. When you struggle to stay awake till very late at night, you are unlikely to do your best in exams. It is hence a must for students to have a full night’s rest before an exam and get at least 6-8 hours of sleep every night during exam preparations. There is a strong relationship between sleep and memory power. When students get adequate sleep, they gain better grades.
